On March 4, 2025, Beary Landscaping, a commercial landscaping and snow removal company based in Lockport, Illinois, and a portfolio company of Silver Oak Services Partners, announced that it had acquired MJS Landscaping Services of Waukesha, Wisconsin. Beary kept all of MJS's existing staff and the MJS brand. Financial terms were not disclosed.
MJS was founded in 1997 and is headquartered near Milwaukee. It provides landscape management, snow removal, and premium landscape design and build services throughout Southern Wisconsin. Its commercial customers include corporate campuses, utilities and municipalities. It also has a residential side that designs and builds custom outdoor living spaces, showing each design to the client as a 3D-animated visual, and it offers tree and arbor care, seasonal color, and stormwater management and erosion control.
Michael Steiner, president of MJS, said: "It was important to me to find a partner that values our employees and customers the same way I have for over 25 years, while also providing high-quality service. After a thorough process, I knew that Beary and MJS would be a perfect fit."
Beary was founded in 1985 and provides recurring landscaping and snow removal services to commercial end markets, including utilities, multi-family living communities, office buildings, and municipalities. When the MJS deal was announced, Beary served more than 1,300 customers across Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, so MJS joined a company that already had customers in the state.
Silver Oak is a lower-middle-market private equity firm in Evanston, Illinois, that invests only in service businesses. Beary dates its partnership with Silver Oak to December 2023. When Silver Oak announced the recapitalization in May 2024, it said Beary's existing management team would stay in their roles and keep a significant ownership stake.
"Joining forces with MJS aligns perfectly with our strategy to partner with like-minded operators," said Brian Beary, Beary's CEO and founder. "This acquisition expands our geographic reach in Wisconsin and reinforces our commitment to delivering the highest-quality landscaping solutions for our clients." Beary's December 2025 year-end release credited MJS with adding both residential and commercial landscape maintenance capabilities.
On June 3, 2025, Beary announced two more deals: Seasonal Solutions, an Overland Park, Kansas, company also founded in 1997, and certain commercial landscaping assets of Suburban Landscaping in Northwest Indiana. Beary said it had then completed three acquisitions since partnering with Silver Oak. Brian Beary called Seasonal "our entry into the attractive Kansas City market." That release described Seasonal as focused exclusively on recurring services, and Beary again said it would keep the staff and the brand. Sun Valley Landscaping, which does commercial maintenance, hardscape and snow work around Indianapolis, followed in September 2025.
Beary tells prospective sellers that their brand stays in place. It offers a full sale, a full or partial sale with a longer transition, or a deal in which the owner keeps running the business indefinitely. Owners comparing structures like these can read our guide on selling a landscaping business to private equity.
Beary sells recurring commercial service, and its next branded add-on after MJS focused exclusively on recurring work, yet it acquired MJS with residential design-build work on its books. For an owner whose work splits between design-build projects and commercial maintenance, that shows residential project work did not prevent MJS from being an attractive target for a sponsor-backed commercial buyer. Three months later the same buyer bought certain commercial landscaping assets from an Indiana provider, so an owner in talks with a buyer like Beary should settle early whether the offer is for the company or for selected assets.
