What happened

Greenwood Industries, a building envelope contractor based in Worcester, Massachusetts, announced on April 30, 2026 that it had acquired Gilbert & Becker Co., Inc., a specialty commercial roofing contractor in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood. Gilbert & Becker will continue to operate under its existing name, with its leadership, teams and day-to-day operations remaining in place. Greenwood said the addition expands its ability to deliver technically complex, high-visibility roofing projects across the Northeast. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The seller

Harris Gilbert and his partner Maurice Becker started the company in 1947. Becker retired in 1962 and Gilbert in 1985, by which time his daughter, Priscilla Alpert, had joined the business in 1966, followed by her husband, Howard Alpert, in 1967. Their son, Alex Alpert, joined in 1989 and is now chief executive, the third generation of the Gilbert family in the company.

Gilbert & Becker is a union roofing contractor serving Eastern Massachusetts, signatory to agreements with Roofers Local 33 and Sheet Metal Local 17, and a charter member of the National Slate Association. It specializes in slate, copper and historic restoration, and is an approved applicator of virtually every roofing system installed in its area.

Its project record is largely Boston landmarks: a full replacement of the copper and slate roofing at Faneuil Hall, the elliptical copper dome at Quincy Market, with each panel fabricated by hand in the field, new slate matching the original construction at King's Chapel, and a tile and copper restoration at the Boston Public Library that used more than nine tons of copper. In Cambridge, its work on the tower of Harvard's Memorial Hall required replicating decorative copper elements and slate patterns from old photographs.

"Our focus has always been on craftsmanship, quality, and solving challenging roofing problems," Alex Alpert said in the announcement. "Partnering with Greenwood allows us to remain true to that mission while expanding our capacity and resources to support larger and more complex projects."

The buyer

Greenwood has provided commercial roofing, architectural metal fabrication, waterproofing, masonry, and maintenance services for more than 30 years, and at the time of the Gilbert & Becker announcement described itself as having 15 locations across the Northeast, Boston among them. Its subsidiaries include Silktown Roofing and TWC Phoenix Waterproofing and Masonry, and it says Roofing Contractor magazine has recognized it as a top 10 US commercial roofing contractor.

Dunes Point Capital, a family office and private investment firm, announced on May 8, 2025 that it had acquired Greenwood and provided the controlling equity for the transaction. Greenwood then had 11 locations across Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and New York and employed approximately 800 people. Gilbert & Becker was announced just under a year later.

"Gilbert & Becker represents the type of company that fits naturally within our organization," said David Klein, Greenwood's chief executive. "Their legacy of craftsmanship, technical depth, and reputation for delivering high-level work strengthens our specialty roofing capabilities while aligning with our commitment to preserving the identity and culture of the companies we partner with."

Two 1947 roofers, one sponsor

On June 30, 2026, Greenwood announced its acquisition of Diamond Roofing, a Central New York roofing company also founded in 1947. By then Greenwood's description of its own services had grown to include historic restoration, a line its April announcement did not list. Greenwood is not Dunes Point's only roofing company: Roofing Services Solutions, another of its portfolio companies, had approximately 20 locations across Florida, Minnesota and Texas when it acquired Lone Star Roofing and Contracting of Burleson, Texas, in October 2025. What this means for roofing owners

By Klein's own account, what Greenwood bought in Gilbert & Becker was craft: technical depth and a reputation built on landmark slate and copper work, not a new market, since Greenwood already operated from Boston. For a New England owner whose book is historic or specialty work rather than commercial square footage, that establishes a regional buyer for the specialty itself, not only for commercial capacity. It also sets a benchmark worth carrying into any negotiation: Greenwood put the continuity of the Gilbert & Becker name and its leadership into the public announcement, so an owner of a comparable shop can ask for the same commitment in the letter of intent.
