FirstService's Roofing Corp of America Acquires Schefers Roofing

What happened

Roofing Corp of America (RCA), the Atlanta-based commercial roofing company owned by FirstService Corporation, acquired Schefers Roofing, a commercial roofing contractor headquartered just outside Kansas City, Missouri. RCA announced the deal on May 20, 2026. FirstService, which trades on the NASDAQ and the Toronto Stock Exchange, announced it on June 10. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The seller

Lance Schefers founded the company in 1995, and it traces its start to "one person in a pickup truck." Before the sale he was its principal owner and president. Schefers Roofing is based in Grain Valley, Missouri, and has also served northwest Arkansas from an office in Rogers since 2008. In 2023 the company said it held licenses to operate in 25 states.

Schefers does its work in-house, from estimate to completion: new construction roofing, replacements, restoration, preventative maintenance and leak repair, plus custom architectural sheet metal through its Schefers Architectural Sheet Metal division. Its completed projects include Topgolf, Hy-Vee and iFLY Indoor Skydiving facilities, and its clients run from retail and warehouse owners to healthcare, automotive and religious facilities. In 2022 it reached the Pinnacle Council level of Johns Manville's Peak Advantage program.

Schefers' existing management team retained a minority equity interest in the business. Lance Schefers stays on as chief executive, and President Doug Mackesty and Senior Superintendent James Napper continue to lead day-to-day operations. Schefers Roofing will operate as a standalone business within RCA. "As consolidation continued across the roofing industry, Roofing Corp of America stood out because they share our values and commitment to our people and customers," Lance Schefers said.

The buyer

RCA was founded in December 2020, and Schefers is its 16th acquisition. It serves building owners, property and facility managers, homeowners' associations and general contractors. Its parent, FirstService, operates two platforms, FirstService Residential and FirstService Brands. "The addition of Schefers expands RCA's geographic footprint into the Kansas City market and further strengthens our presence in the Midwest U.S. region," RCA Chief Executive Randy Korach said.

How RCA structures its acquisitions

The Schefers terms repeat those of RCA's two previous acquisitions: A-1 All American Roofing of San Diego, its 14th, reported in May 2025, and Springer-Peterson Roofing & Sheet Metal of Lakeland, Florida, its 15th, announced in September 2025. In a September 2025 release covering both, FirstService said their existing management teams had retained minority equity interests and would continue to oversee day-to-day operations. Springer-Peterson, like Schefers, was set up as a standalone business within RCA.

The same arrangement sits one level up. When FirstService bought a controlling interest in RCA in December 2023 for $413 million, RCA's senior leadership, including Korach, kept the balance of the equity and continued to run the business. What this means for commercial roofing owners

For commercial roofing owners around Kansas City and in northwest Arkansas, a buyer with a publicly traded parent now has an operating company in their market, and in each of its last three acquisitions the sellers' management kept a minority interest and stayed in charge of daily operations. An owner in talks with RCA, or a buyer built the same way, should weigh what rollover equity in the business is worth, and on what terms it can later be sold, as closely as the cash at closing.
